Descriptions

GROCERY

Canned or boxed goods that are shelf-stable (do not need to be refrigerated). All items in Grocery have a shelf life, meaning items will expire after a specified amount of time.

NUTS AND SEEDS

This category contains both nuts (kernels found in shells) and seeds (for eating, not planting). See Subcategories for more details.

NUTS

A large and oily kernel that is found in a shell and used in food. The culinary definition of a nut (which we use here) is less strict than the botanical definition. This is why, for example, we consider a peanut a nut, even though it’s technically a legume.

PISTACHIO

Reddish-brown, flaky skin, light green flesh. Oval-shaped. Often sold in-shell and shelled.

ALMOND

Dark brown exterior, off-white interior. Round at one end, pointed at the other. Longer than it is thick. Typically sold shelled.

PEANUT

Oval-shaped with a flaky, reddish-brown outer skin and light brown flesh. Common to be sold in-shell or shelled.

CASHEW

Light brown color, curved shape. Splits in half lengthwise without much effort.

MIXED NUT WITHOUT PEANUT

A variety of nuts sold together, not including peanuts.

MIXED NUT WITH PEANUT

A variety of nuts sold together, including peanuts.

MACADAMIA NUT

Soft, off-white color once shelled. Shaped similar to a dumpling—round, but wider than they are tall.

PECAN

Dark brown outer skin. Ridged lengthwise to create three distinct sections in the structure. Results in a shape akin to a central spine and two lungs, one on either side.

VARIETY PACK

A variety of nuts sold together but packaged separately. Each individual package contains only one type of nut.

WALNUT

Light brown outer skin. Wide shape with two connected semi-oval pieces.

PINE NUT

Thin, oval shape. Off-white, smooth, glossy flesh.

REMAINING NUTS

Any nut not otherwise identified in the hierarchy.

SOY NUT

Soybeans soaked in water, drained, then baked or roasted. Similar to a peanut in shape and size.

CHESTNUT

Dark brown exterior, off-white interior. Semi-round shape. Typically sold shelled.

BRAZIL NUT

Dark brown exterior, off-white interior. Shaped like a peanut, but larger. Typically sold shelled.

HAZELNUT/FILBERT

Known as both hazelnuts and filberts. The two are not separate nuts. Round shape with one pointed end. Slightly glossy hue to the outer skin.

NUTS AND SEEDS COMBINATION PACKS

NUTS AND SEEDS COMBINATION PACKS

Seeds and nuts, sold together in a pack. Sizes vary from small, individual snack packs to larger bins similar to what you'd find for a tub of trail mix.

SEEDS

A flowering plant’s unit of reproduction. In a grocery context, these are packaged and sold with the intention of consuming, not planting.

SUNFLOWER

Dark grey shell, light grey flesh. Seed has one pointed end and one round end.

PUMPKIN/SQUASH

Off-white shell, olive green flesh. Semi-flat oval shape with two pointed ends.

SESAME

Smaller than many other seeds in this subcategory. Can be black or very light brown color. One pointed end and one round end.

REMAINING SEEDS

Any type of seed not otherwise identified in the hierarchy.

FLAX SEEDS

Brown, semi-flat seed with oval shape. One pointed end and one round end.
